| If you could look into the backpack of a typical 9-to-12 year old girl, chances are
you'd find at least one of these books! "ALL the girls are reading them",
according to a very reliable source of mine who attends a local charter public middle
school. It's no wonder why these books are such popular chapter books! They're very entertaining, the characters are interesting and down-to-earth, and the anime-style comic inserts are funny! These books are about the magic of friendship among a group of kids including Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia, and Hay Lin. Hence, the acronym W.I.T.C.H. There's a bit of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch humor in here! There's also a lot of fun reading ahead. Girls can easily identify with the characters who all seem to have a good sense of humor and go through the usual pre-teen angst and drama. These books come with trading cards, which are more popular with the younger crowd (ages 9-10 - at 11, cards are not as hip, and at 12, you'll get an eyeroll or two!). Give the trading cards to your little brother and you keep the book! There's nothing accidental about the friendship of these girls. They are joined together by magic, of course! Whether you're reading about magical transformations, enchanting powers, managing magic, disappearing boys, dark secrets, dangerous mysteries (without violence), rising tempers, evil confrontations, Meridian's complex history, ending an ancient curse, illusions, or hidden secrets, you'll never be bored with this series of delightful chapter books for girls. I enjoyed the strong story lines and the colorful anime-style cartoon inserts in the books. It's nice to see a series like this developed for girls that blends fantasy and magic in a nice way! No violence here, just great reading adventures. Move over, Harry Potter, we like these girl heroines who are very powerful indeed! Two transforming powers up to Disney for discovering this enchanting book series! Could a television cartoon show be far behind? |
