William Henry Harrison, Young Tippecanoe |

Ever wonder what it was like growing up in Virginia in the late 1700s as a young boy? By reading the second book in the Young Patriot Series, William Henry Harrison, Young Tippecanoe, children can step into Billy's shoes and get a glimpse of American history! A young hero and brave boy, Billy Harrison seemed destined to become an adult hero. He struggled with career choices as he decided whether to be a doctor or a soldier. My 8-year-old son, Tim, loved this book because he could easily identify with Billy and the strength and courage he displayed as a young boy. He enjoyed reading this book alone and talked about various parts of the book--his first reading adventure which dealt with what it was like to be a child in a country in the midst of war. Tim told me, after reading this book, that he had a better understanding of what the words in the Declaration of Independence meant. Like Billy, he understood the significance of the words, "We mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor!" Certainly, this book is inspiring to kids! In fact, Young Tippecanoe pursued the Great American Dream and is an outstanding role model to children of all ages. He was devoted to his country and fought for what he believed in. Most impressive, he helped people throughout his life, despite not practicing medicine (although completing the first term of medical school). This 13-chapter book covers Billy's heroic adventures as he rescues his sister from drowning in the river; rescues (and captures) an injured British soldier a year later; flees from the family plantation and delivers a very important message about Benedict Arnold's whereabouts, and more. After kids read about Harrison's youth, Army (the defeat of Tecumseh at the famous Battle of Tippecanoe) and political career, they'll discover what happened next! For instance, did you know that William Henry Harrison served as the United States' 9th President for only 30 days? Sadly, he died from a cold that developed into pneumonia and became the first president to die in office. Well-written chapters include:
Mrs. Patti Hanlon, a 2nd grade teacher at Cheyenne Traditional School in Scottsdale, AZ thought the content of this book was "extremely interesting due to the factual information on William Henry Harrison." Says Mrs. Hanlon, "The content kept my attention throughout the entire book. The way I see the book being incorporated into the classroom (2nd grade) would be as a read aloud to the entire class. The content would be more appropriate for intermediate grades, 4th and 5th." Mrs. Hanlon added that intermediate teachers would benefit from using this book to enhance their social studies units of study--especially units on the U.S. Presidents. "I am currently reading the first Young Patriots Series book, Amelia Earhart. My second grade students are enjoying it. In fact, they are always asking me to read for a longer time!", she said. "I liked the specific vocabulary that was used in the William Henry Harrison book. For example, saber, traitor, and barracks..these are words to be discussed and give students a historical perspective, or a better understanding of the time period", Mrs. Hanlon said. |
