| Don't let the title fool you. This book is not a "bad beginning". It is the
first book of a uniquely twisted series of books by Lemony Snicket. We can certainly relate to bad days, bad events, and in this case, a series of unfortunate events. Is this book extremely unpleasant? I think not. Lemony Snicket's creative writing is a refreshing change from most of the books you'll find for this hard-to-please age group. In fact, teachers should include this book in their recommended reading list for it teaches kids a good range of vocabulary words. A very nice collection indeed, A Series of Unfortunate Events introduces readers to three siblings who are, in fact, orphans. Whether it's terrible news, impending disasters, or vile villains, the courageous Baudelaires will face it. Will their luck ever improve? Unlikely. Do these books have happy endings? Not likely. In fact, do pigs fly? Lemony Snicket can warn you all he wants--these books are hilarious and shouldn't be taken seriously. Any kid who loves reading (and even those who do not) will search high and low for these books and develop a voracious appetite for each and every one of them, which we hope to review on The Review Zone.com The Bad Beginning should definitely be read at one sitting, and read again. The illustrations (black and white) make the book even more interesting. Not that you need illustrations to picture what is happening in this unhappy tale. The writing flows like rain down the gutter. A dirty gutter, but flowing, nevertheless. That is not to say the books are filthy or dirty. They are rather dark, but in a good Harry Potter sort of way! Highly recommended by The Review Zone.com. Look for my upcoming reviews on each book in this delightful series of misery and woe. The perfect book to read in bed when you're feeling sick or whether you're just looking for some books loaded with misfortune, misery, and despair. |
