| Discovery and invention go hand-in-hand. This book covers 45 "technological
touchstones" and inspires young inventors with stories of how people in the past and
present solved problems by developing solutions. It is the impact of these solutions that
have carved our modern world as we know it. This book is aimed at kids 9 and older. There are five major chapters or segments of the book. Each segment covers a significant time period. For example, Chapter One includes The Ancient World (before 3500 B.C.), while Chapter Two covers The Metal Age (3500 B.C. - A.D. 1). Other chapters span The Age of Discovery, The Age of Electricity and Communication and The Age of the Atom (1887 - present). The author of this book has done a remarkable job organizing and writing on what could be a mundane subject. I liked the way topics are addressed. The author explains how it works, the impact of the invention and who the "children of this invention" are. Two lab beakers up to Steve "The Dirtmeister" Tomecek who is an experience writer, geologist, and science consultant who has dedicated his life to making science more fun for young and old! You'll even find a couple of pages of interesting web sites dedicated to invention and invention contests for young scientists! From the axle to antiseptics, this book covers it all! Highly recommended reading from The Review Zone.com. After all, what would this world be without innovative thinking? |
