| If your kids loved reading Harry Potter and you're searching for thematic activities
based on magic, spells, and potions, I've got a wonderful workbook to recommend for your
inquisitive children. Author Carole Marsh does a fantastic job teaching kids "magical things about magic, magicians, real magic, historical magic, fake magic, good magic, and bad magic" in her activity book, Good Magic, Spells, Potions, and More from History, Literature, and Make-Believe. This workbook isn't work--it shows kids that reading is fun and participating in the activities is the best way to beat the summer boredom blues! Ms. Marsh invites kids of all ages into "a magical land of facts, trivia and fun." For instance, kids can learn vocabulary words from alchemy to wampum; make magical "stone soup"; read about Merlin, Houdini and Copperfield; and discover mysterious sea serpents. There are gads of creative activities in the book which emphasize intuitive thinking skills and provides kids (and their parents and teachers) with plenty of library resources. Whether kids are practicing creative writing by describing their very own island of enchantment or they're concocting invisible ink, or charming snakes, this activity book is loaded with 19 topics which emphasize the history and literary aspects of magic. Kids love humorous stories about fairies, witches and wizards! Carole Marsh does a terrific job including whimsical tales that spin an intricate web to trigger the imaginations of young and old. A nice variety of graphics throughout the book with lined pages (for fill-in activities) makes this book great for elementary-age kids who have mastered reading and writing. Nicely worded text on magic charms, amulets, and spells provides kids with precisely enough information! Throughout the book, you'll find age appropriate text on what some parents might interpret as witchcraft! Don't worry, be happy! Kids can innocently experience magic, myths, fortune-telling, mythology, alchemy, masks, magic tricks, and card tricks. They may be inspired to become amateur magicians but you don't have to worry that they'll start hexing teachers with voodoo dolls. Don't even go there! Perfect for the home school and the creative classroom, this book helps inspire the imagination in all of us. It's just the stepping stone in another magical adventure and it's up to you begin a new chapter where this book ends. The book also includes a glossary, an index and an answer key to questions. |
