Best book on "Dubya" for elementary-school kids!

| If you've tried workbooks (or activity books) with little luck during the summer or
during the school year for your elementary-age kids, you've got to check out Carole
Marsh's new Here & Now series! Great for home-schools, teachers, and parents who want to supplement their child's learning, these 48-page reproducible workbooks are awesome and they really make learning fun! The Here & Now series helps kids learn new subjects in a non-intimidating way. The whole purpose of the series is to explore "things kids want to learn about today!" Reading Carole Marsh's workbooks are like chatting with a new best friend. Not only does she encourage kids to explore new subjects, she helps them reinforce their critical thinking skills. Teachers find these workbooks easy to incorporate into their classroom as handouts are well-received (and usually not considered boring homework). First of all, we were thrilled to read George W. Bush: America's Newest President, and His White House Family. Recently, we went through shelves and shelves of library books searching for a bibliography on "Dubya", and came up empty-handed. We settled on a biography of Dubya's famous dad, George Bush, for my son's final book report for Grade 3. If you're a teacher (traditional school or home-school classrooms) and you want to introduce your class to America's 43rd president , this is the most fun-filled book you'll find on the subject. Carole Marsh cuts to the chase--leaving out the boring statistics but filling kids' minds with hip information broken down in kid-size pieces. For example, you'll find vocabulary words from alma mater to West Wing in a page entitled "The Bush League--West Wing Words You Need to Know!" Clever graphic design and cartoon images makes this workbook unique, unusual, and a wealth of information. Whether you're making a biography bottle for George W. Bush or discovering that the President prefers peanut butter and jelly (unlike his famous dad who didn't like broccoli), this is a must read! First Lady Laura Bush and the now-famous Bush twins gets a couple of pages (including a library activity where kids help the First Lady set up the Bush family library by putting book titles in alphabetical order) and a writing activity where kids are asked to pretend they are teenagers living in the White House and to write a diary entry of a typical day in the White House! From political roots and family trees, to presidential pets and a presidential dossier (set up on a fake Palm Pilot), this book is awesome! Loaded with fun-filled facts on Dick Cheney (including a Vice-Presidential Word Wheel), word searches, and plenty of interesting White House trivia, this book is recommended reading for kids in grades 3 and up who want to get up and close to America's newest President. Incredible for the classroom or at home, there are pages and pages of reproducible handouts and worksheets to use in and out of the classroom. And finally, kids can understand what the Electoral College is and why our country has one. That, in itself, is worth the $8 this book costs! |
