This book is a poignant tribute to Peter Ganci. For those of you not familiar with this strong man, he was the chief of the New York City Fire Department and the highest ranking fire official to die on September 11, 2001. He was a hero to so many people, including his own son.

This book was written by his youngest son, Chris Ganci, who founded the Peter J. Ganci, Jr. Memorial Foundation, which supports (financially and emotionally) the families of firefighters.

The story is extremely well-written and gives us all an insight into the devastating impact that the tragic events of 9/11 had on a family, on a fire department, and to the world.

By reading this book, children get to learn about who Peter Ganci was.

From his childhood to his career ladder up to head of the fire department. He was a strong, brave, and good man.

I think my favorite part of this book are the photographs. It's a nice sized book (picture book size) which lends well in the classroom. Teachers can read this story aloud to their classes and show the pictures that say more than the words do.

It's hard to read this book without wiping tears from your eyes. Chris Ganci goes over the call of duty as he shares his personal thoughts and moments of his father with us. He wants us to know what a good guy his dad was. It was this world that his father loved that he gave so freely to, including his own life. Peter J. Ganci gave the world his ultimate sacrifice - his own life to spare others.

It is the author's wish to honor all of the fallen heroes of September 11th by sharing his story of his father.

Although many superior humans performed extraordinary acts of courage, this story gives children a very personal look at just one American hero. It gives us a great appreciation of all of the worlds's firefighting heroes who put their lives on the line each and every day as they ignore their own safety to protect others. They are selfless heroes and deserve our daily respect.

Sadly, 343 members of FDNY were taken on September 11th, 2001. This book is dedicated to each and every one of them and their families, friends, and communities.

I highly recommend this book to parents, to teachers, to home-school teachers and most of all, to all librarians. This book should be a part of every library in the United States of America. This book says so much. It has documented history in a very personal way. Kids will learn compassion for others by reading this book as they grasp with their feelings about 9/11. Many kids are still frightened by the events surrounding 9/11. This book can help bring closure or open up the lines of communication with your own kids.

Thank you, Chris Ganci, for sharing your touching stories about your dad with all of us. I think your message is strong and through your newly established foundation, you will be carrying on your dad's name and memory. I didn't know him personally, but I felt like I had known him forever once I read his story.

Chris, you have already made your father proud. Now, your story has to be shared with the kids who will shape our country. It's something Chief would have done for you. May you find strength, peace, and inspiration through your dreams.

My best regards to you and your family,
